Muthina’s #JitegemeeDream

In 2017, we launched our #JitegemeeDream series, an online visual storytelling initiative that we are continuing and expanding in 2018. Working with Zimbabwean photojournalist, Fungai Tichawangana, our high school students took photos, videos, and wrote stories about their lives and their dreams for a brighter future. Here is Muthina’s story: "My name is Muthina. My #JitegemeeDream is to become a doctor. I am 14 years old and am in Form One at St. Lawrence Girls' School. My favorite … [Read more...]

First-time celebration for Jitegemee University Graduate

2017 University Graduate - John Kiluma - graduated from Cooperative University of Kenya with a BCom with a 2nd Class Upper. We are so proud of John for coming so far!

“Today is the first day I am celebrating an event in my entire life. I have never celebrated any event in my life; not even a birthday,” John Kiluma told Jitegemee staff at his graduation from Cooperative University of Kenya on 1 December, 2017. John joined Jitegemee in 2009 when he was in Class 8, and it was soon clear he was a hard-working, bright student. He progressed to Machakos Boys High School and after achieving excellent results in his K.C.S.E. (GED-equivalent) exams, he progressed … [Read more...]

#JitegemeeDream – Our students’ hopes for a better life

The children of Jitegemee would like to take you on a journey; a journey into their homes, their past, their realities, and their dreams for a brighter future. Join us for their #JitegemeeDream, a multimedia journey that will show you the reality of their daily struggles, but will also remind you what it's like to be a child again and inspire you to keep pushing for your own dreams. Over the next few weeks, we will be introducing you to our secondary school students. Then, from the beginning … [Read more...]

“I was so happy that day” – Annual Field Trip

A few weeks ago, along with some friends visiting from the USA, we took our Vocational students on a field trip to Lake Naivasha and Hell's Gate National Park. Here's what they had to say about the trip: It was on a Wednesday when we had to travel for a long journey to Lake Naivasha. Awoken up by the phone, I jumped out of my bed as if pricked by a thousand hot needles. I threw my red Raymond blanket, leaving it in a heap. When I went outside, the sun rose from the deep bowels of mother earth. … [Read more...]

A Dear Friend Visits Jitegemee

From 2-9 September, a small group of visitors from the United States of America came to Jitegemee. This group included David Woods, a longtime friend of Jitegemee, along with Abby Kral and Catherine Mosca, both board members in the U.S.A. Here's David's report from his visit to Kenya, Machakos, and Jitegemee: I have known Farah Stockman since before she founded Jitegemee. I was a colleague of her mother, Ida Stockman, at Howard University. I served on the board of Jitegemee for a few years more … [Read more...]

What a Day for Health!

Hundreds of Jitegemee children and parents participated in our Annual Health Days held on 17 and 18 August during the school break, and received a check-up, treatment and medication from our expert team of local healthcare practitioners, headed up by Dr. Desire Aime Nshimirimana and Mr. Bannister Kilonzo. An exciting addition to this year's Health Day was a presentation and discussion on sexual and reproductive health, facilitated by our team of 18 peer educators, comprised of students from our … [Read more...]

Meshack has been a member of Jitegemee for many years. His father died when he was just 10 years old. His mother struggled to keep him and his two siblings fed and in school. In this video, Meshack talks about how that all changed after he joined Jitegemee, and how he is now on his way to attaining a university degree. This is Meshack's story. Meshack's Story was filmed and produced by Fungai Tichawangana. … [Read more...]

Success for Felicitas

Meet Felicitas. She’s the third born in a family of six. She was raised by a single mum in Mjini slum outside Machakos. She dropped out of school at the end of primary school and started doing odd jobs so she could buy food or clothes. “My friends, girls I grew up with, were street children. They would sniff glue, sleep on the streets, because they didn’t have homes. Some ran away because they were hungry, some because they were sexually abused. They found it hard so they went to the … [Read more...]

Machakos Community Visits Jitegemee

Jitegemee's first Open Day held on April 21, 2017, was a huge success and we welcomed more than 250 guests to celebrate at our campus! Our students, alumni, staff, parents, mentors,  and Board Chair Terry Mutuku gave powerful presentations about the role Jitegemee has played in providing a better future for our students. These presentations were interspersed by poetry and musical performances by our students, concluding with a rousing joint performance with local musicians Mtu Saba and Kyalo … [Read more...]
