JITEGEMEE SOCIAL WORKER
BACKGROUND
Founded in 2002, Jitegemee supports over 200 street and destitute children annually in Machakos, Kenya. We provide access to formal and vocational education for street children and teens through scholarships to primary and secondary schools. Our vocational program matches students with skilled artisans in the community. We provide daily lunch, extra tuition, family counseling, medical care, economic empowerment training, and support to children and their families.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

Jitegemee will be co-implementing a new project with Terre Des Hommes Netherlands. The project, Reigniting Dreams, aims to contribute to the reduction of sexual exploitation of children and youth (SEC/Y) in Mlolongo, Kenya, and will ensure that youth and children at risk/survivors of SEC/Y have expanded economic opportunities through the acquisition of relevant vocational/technical, entrepreneurial, life skills and employability skills, and are more aware of their rights.

ABOUT THE POSITION

Reporting to the Jitegemee’s Economic Empowerment Manager, the Social Worker will oversee the mobilization, training and follow up of project beneficiaries. S/he will follow up/track project beneficiaries attendance of sessions, both technical training and psychosocial support. Moreover, s/he will work with the economic empowerment manager to oversee mapping, assessment and enrolment of children and youth into programme interventions namely; mentorship, apprenticeship and vocational skills training The Social Worker will be based in Mlolongo, Machakos County

OBJECTIVES

Based in Mlolongo, the Jitegemee social worker will assist the Economic Empowerment Manager in delivering project outcomes.

MAIN DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The position is a 15-month with a probability of an extension depending on performance and availability of funds. The main duties and responsibilities  of work for the social worker will include;

  • Facilitating the assessment and enrollment of -children, and youth in mentorship, apprenticeship, and vocational training opportunities.
  • Conduct home visits and follow up of  project participants to establish their well being during the project period
  • Facilitate  life skills , sexual reproductive health and rights, children rights, human rights and job skills training opportunities for  children and youth with the support of the Economic Empowerment Manager
  • Work closely with the schools headteachers and club matrons/ patrons in conducting sensitisation to school going children on their rights and protection from sexual exploitation .
  • Facilitate assessments of those eligible for start up kits
  • Assisting and organizing dialogue sessions with youth to commit to engaging in awareness-building among their peers to prevent, report, and respond to the sexual exploitation of children and youth.
  • Together with the Economic empowerment manager work closely with the private sector in Mlolongo develop and implement child protection policies.
  • Working closely with community facilitators and Nyumba Kumi members to effectively facilitate  dialogue sessions with truck drivers, boda boda riders and community members to sensitise them on identification, response and reporting  sexual exploitation cases in a timely manner
  • Working closely with the office of the Directorate of Children Services , youth office and the police in addressing the issues affecting children and youth in Mlolongo
  • Participate in report writing and sharing updates on the project
  • Work with the economic empowerment manager to document project progress including success stories
  • Support in setting up case files. Provide  support  to the counselling team as guided  in establishment of case files for the project beneficiaries The social worker is expected to undertake any other duties as assigned by her/his supervisor.

EXPERIENCE AND KEY COMPETENCIES

The successful social worker will have the following key competencies:

  • A diploma or a B.A. degree in Social Work or Community Development.
  • Minimum of three years of experience working in the development sector, preferably in the NGO sector.
  • Hands-on experience in working with children and youth who are at risk or survivors of sexual exploitation/SGBV survivors/key populations.
  • Good communication skills and the ability to demonstrate empathy.
  • Ability to adopt a non-judgmental approach regardless of the background of the project beneficiaries.
  • High levels of integrity with a good understanding of (child) safeguarding practices.
  • Excellent mobilization skills, with knowledge of the local context.
  • Good report writing and analytical skills.
  • Ability to communicate well, both verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to integrate and work with people from different backgrounds.
  • Demonstrates a high level of patience when working with project beneficiaries. Ability to work under limited supervision.
