Thriving Through Play: The Magic of Learning and Dreaming at Jitegemee!

At Jitegemee, the sounds of laughter, the frantic shuffling of cards, and the rhythmic thud of a soccer ball aren’t just background noise—they are the sounds of education in action. While traditional classrooms often prioritize silence and rote memorization, we’ve discovered a powerful secret: Play is the natural language of a child. To reach them, we don’t just need to speak; we need to play.

By integrating play into our core programming, we aren’t just making life more “fun” for the children; we are fundamentally changing how they absorb critical life lessons. We believe that when children are laughing and moving, they are also growing into smart and confident leaders.

From Awkward Silences to Action Heroes.
Let’s be honest: talking about bodies, health, and growing up (SRHRE) can be a little embarrassing for any young person. Often, children feel too shy to ask the questions that really matter. But at Jitegemee, we’ve found a way to chase the “shyness” out of the room. We turn these big, important lessons into games and stories!
Instead of sitting through a long, dry lecture, our children grab a deck of cards or step onto a “stage” to act out a scene. For example:
The “Drama” Method: We use short plays to practice real-life moments. If a child needs to learn how to say “no” to peer pressure or how to stand up for their rights, they act it out first with their friends. Dramatization allows them to practice real-world decision-making in a safe environment, ensuring that when they face these choices in life, they aren’t just remembering a textbook—they’re remembering a lived experience.

The Card Games: These help turn facts into a fun challenge. Children compete and laugh, and before they know it, they’ve memorized vital health information without even trying. When a child “acts out” a scenario or wins a round of cards based on health facts, the message sticks.

Crafting Collaboration: Art and Soft Skills.
In the modern world, “soft skills” like communication and collaboration are just as vital as academic scores. We nurture these through creative play. In the shared building projects, our children work together to create stunning pieces of art.

We also use play to teach “soft skills”—the kind of skills you can’t always get from a textbook. When children work together on a large project, they are doing more than just constructing. They are learning how to:

  • Talk to each other to solve problems.
  • Work as a team to reach a goal.
  • Support one another when things get tricky.

These artistic moments turn into beautiful masterpieces, but the real masterpiece is the bond the children build with each other.

A Partnership for Change: Jitegemee and GFC

Our journey toward becoming a play-based learning hub has been greatly accelerated by our partnership with the Global Fund for Children (GFC).
GFC have done more than just provide support from a distance; they have helped us transform how we work. Through their guidance, we’ve shifted our perspective to put the child’s voice and joy at the center of everything we do. This partnership has empowered us to move away from rigid, traditional teaching methods and embrace more creative, flexible interventions. With GFC’s support, we have gained the tools and the confidence to prove that when children are having fun, they are also doing their most serious learning.

Visualizing the Future

Play also provides a window into the souls of our children. Through continuous engagement in art activities, we ask them to draw their aspirations. These aren’t just sketches; they are blueprints for their futures. By seeing their goals—be it becoming a doctor, an artist, or an engineer—rendered in vibrant colors, we better understand how to tailor our support to help them reach those dreams.

“Play isn’t just essential; it is how we get the job done at Jitegemee.”

At Jitegemee, play isn’t “extra” time—it’s the most important time. It’s how we teach, how we listen, and—with the help of partners like GFC—how we help every child grow into the person they were meant to be. At the end of the day, we believe that a child who is playing is a child who is growing. By meeting them where they are most comfortable—in the world of imagination and physical activity—we ensure that the lessons they learn today stay with them for a lifetime.
