“Harambee!” in Kiswahili means “all pull together.” This word has come to be associated with the Kenyan tradition of community self-help events like fundraising and development activities. This spirit of community spirit and support was evident on our campus when we hosted our first ever Jitegemee Harambee in Machakos on 11th August, 2023!
The event was well-attended by a wide range of community members – business leaders, government partners, Machakos area schools, and a host of local leaders led by the office Machakos Town Constitutency, Hon. Caleb Mule who was represented by Beatrice Mbete.
The fundraiser raised well over one million (1,000,000) Kenyan shillings thanks to the generous contributions from our community, as well as the hard work of our students, caregivers, and team. Several local businesses and individuals also made in-kind donations, including a 10,000 liter water tank and pipes to harvest water from our roof during the rainy season, and also donations of clothing and food for our children.
“We are so grateful to the community for their immense support. We feel so special that you contributed to these children.” said Jennifer Katiwa, Country Director. “These funds will help us to ensure that even more children have the opportunity to get an education and build a better future for themselves.”
